How to Summarize a Webpage in Chrome Without Losing Context
Turn selected webpage text into a useful summary in Chrome, then verify the summary against headings, evidence, and the original passage.
A useful webpage summary is not simply shorter text. It should preserve the source’s central claim, essential evidence, scope, and important caveats. Selecting the right passage and checking the result matter as much as the AI action itself.
Decide what you need from the summary
Use a specific instruction:
- “Summarize the main argument in three bullets.”
- “List the steps and preserve warnings.”
- “Explain this section for a non-specialist.”
- “Extract the decision, deadline, and required action.”
The format should match the task. A study note, meeting brief, and technical checklist need different summaries.
Select a coherent section
Include the heading with its paragraphs when possible. Do not combine disconnected sections merely because they fit in one selection. For a very long page, summarize sections separately, then create your own overall synthesis.
Check the result against the source
Before relying on it, verify:
- Is the main claim represented accurately?
- Are exceptions or limitations missing?
- Do names, figures, and dates match?
- Did the summary turn an opinion into a fact?
- Can you locate each important point in the original?
An AI summary can omit, overemphasize, or invent details. Treat it as a reading aid, not evidence.
Review browser permissions
Chrome lets users control whether an extension can access the current site, selected sites, or all sites. Google documents these options in its extension management guide. Use the narrowest access that supports your workflow and avoid processing sensitive page content unnecessarily.
Save the source with your notes
Record the page title, URL, author or publisher, and access date. A summary without its source becomes hard to verify later and should not replace a citation.
PageAssist AI can summarize selected webpage text inside Chrome, so the source remains visible while you evaluate the result.
