How to Translate Selected Text in Safari on Mac
Translate a sentence or passage in Safari while keeping the surrounding webpage visible and preserving the context you need to evaluate it.
When you need only one paragraph translated, copying it into another tab breaks the reading flow and hides the surrounding context. A selection-based Safari workflow keeps the source passage, page structure, and result close together.
Select a complete thought
Highlight enough text to preserve meaning. A full sentence or short paragraph usually works better than an isolated word because pronouns, tone, and ambiguous terms depend on context.
Avoid selecting navigation labels, footnotes, and unrelated text along with the passage. For a long article, translate one coherent section at a time.
Run the translation action
With PageAssist AI enabled in Safari, select the text and choose the translation action. Specify the destination language when it is not obvious. Keep the original visible while reviewing the result.

Verify names, numbers, and important claims
Machine translation can produce fluent wording while mishandling a name, negation, idiom, measurement, or legal term. Compare:
- dates, currencies, and quantities;
- names and product terminology;
- negative statements and exceptions;
- headings against the paragraph beneath them.
For legal, medical, financial, academic, or safety-critical material, use an authoritative translation or a qualified human reviewer.
Ask for clarification, not just replacement text
If a sentence remains unclear, try a custom instruction such as “explain this sentence in plain English and preserve the technical terms.” Separating explanation from translation makes uncertainty easier to notice.
Keep sensitive text out of unnecessary workflows
Do not submit passwords, private messages, confidential client data, or personal records to an AI action unless you understand and accept how the service processes that content.
